The airport Chiayi ( Chinese 嘉義航空站 , Pinyin Jiayi Hángkōngzhàn ) is an airport located in Chiayi County in Taiwan (Republic of China) . The airport is also unofficially known as Shuishang Airport ( Chinese 水上 機場 , Pinyin Shuǐshàng Jīchǎng ) due to its location in the rural community of Shuishang .
history
From May 19, 1976, civil aviation began at the Chiayi airfield, which was previously used exclusively for military purposes. The airport terminal went into operation on January 1, 1978 after about a year of construction and was expanded from February to November 1995. The current terminal building covers an area of 1464 m². The airport apron measures 11,900 m² and there is a runway measuring 3050 × 45 meters.
The airport with the adjacent air base located Chiayi a common runway and a common runway . The helipad , which has an area of 10,815 m² and three helicopter parking spaces, is also shared.
From 1979, Great China Airlines (大 華 航空, part of Uni Air since 1998 ) started flight operations with the destinations Taipei and Magong. Other airlines were added later ( China Airlines , TransAsia Airways , Far Eastern Air Transport , Formosa Airlines ). After the airport passed the one million passenger mark in 1996, it was upgraded to a "Class C airport". A decisive turning point was the opening of the high-speed train connection in 2005/07 and the gradually improved rail and train connections to the Chiayi district. Both of these factors meant that the travel time between Chiayi and Taipei by train or car was drastically reduced and the number of air passengers in Chiayi decreased significantly. Ultimately, the flights from Chiayi to other airports on the island of Taiwan were completely suspended. In 2016, 78,826 passengers were counted in Chiayi. On December 17, 2012, the Executive Yuan approved the establishment of international charter flights to Chiayi.
Occasionally in the past incidents at the Chiayi Air Force Base also disrupted civil air traffic to Chiayi.
Airlines and connections
Scheduled flights are currently only available through Uni Air to the outlying islands to Kinmen and Magong .
Aviation accidents
On August 21, 1990, a Beechcraft 1900-1 of the Taiwanese Air Force (ROCAF) crashed into a sugar cane field near Dongshi (Yunlin) and went up in flames. All 18 inmates were killed. The cause of the accident is unknown.
