Pingzhen ( Chinese 平鎮 區 , Pinyin Píngzhèn Qū , Hakka Phìn-chṳ́n-khî , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Pêng-tìn-khu ) is a district of the subordinate government of Taoyuan in Taiwan .
Location and history
Pingzhen is around the center of Taoyuan. Its neighboring districts are Yangmei in the west, Zhongli in the north, Bade and Daxi in the east and Longtan in the south. Most of the inhabitants belong to the Hakka ethnic group .
Archaeological finds indicate that the area of today's district was already inhabited in prehistoric times. Chinese immigrants, especially the Hakka ethnic group, have settled here since the 18th century. The Qing Dynasty authorities built some fortifications to protect against attacks by indigenous people and named the area Anping zhen ("Market Town of Security"). At the time of the Japanese rule over Taiwan , the place name was changed to today's Pingzhen in 1920 to distinguish it from the Anping district in Tainan .
meaning
The formerly rural district now has the character of a suburb of the nearby cities of Taipei and New Taipei , in whose urbanized settlement area the district largely merges. With a population of around 219,000 (2016), Pingzhen is the third largest district in Taoyuan City. Pingzhen is connected to Taiwan's main highway, Highway 1 .
