Fuxing ( Chinese  復興 區 , Pinyin Fùxīng Qū , Hakka Fu̍k-hîn-khî , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Hok-heng-khu , Atayal: Pyasan ) is the southernmost district of the government- direct city of Taoyuan in Taiwan .

Location and history

Fuxing forms the extensive southern tip of the metropolis Taoyuan. Unlike the other districts of the city, Fuxing extends far into the north of the Taiwan Central Mountains. The terrain is mountainous and only allows isolated agriculture, which explains its low population. In terms of area, Fuxing is by far the largest district in Taoyuan (about a third of the total area of the city), at the same time it is the district with by far the lowest population density. The majority of the population belongs to the indigenous people of the Atayal .

The area of today's Fuxing District was and is called by the Atayal Pyasan . In contrast to the lowlands, the mountainous, barren area attracted only a few Chinese settlers in the 19th and 20th centuries, so that the culture of the Atayal has largely been preserved until modern times. It was only towards the end of the 19th century that the Chinese authorities undertook major and sometimes military efforts to bring the area under their control. In 1886, Liu Mingchuan , governor of Taiwan Province , is said to have given the area of today's district the Chinese name of Jiaoban . This name continued to be used during and after the Japanese rule over Taiwan . On October 31, 1954, the designated Kuomintang Agencies of the district on the occasion of the birthday of Chiang Kai-shek in Fuxing ( "Renewal") to, on the basis of the propagated by the government objective of "Renewal of China". In the course of the democratization of Taiwan and the increasing return of the indigenous people to their culture, resistance to the place names, which was perceived as sinocentric, grew at the beginning of the 21st century . Efforts are being made by the Atayal to officially rename the district to Pyasan .

meaning

Due to its location and topography, Fuxing is hardly developed agriculturally or industrially. On the other hand, the touristic importance is increasing thanks to its scenic beauty, peaches from Fuxing, especially from the slopes of the Lala mountain , are enjoying growing popularity with visitors and as an export good. A well-known destination is the Presbyterian Church of Jiguopai from 1964.

As an indigenous district , Fuxing has enjoyed administrative autonomy in some areas since 2014.
