Daxi , also Dasi ( Chinese 大溪 區 , Pinyin Dàxī Qū , Tongyong Pinyin Dàsi Cyu ), is a district (區, Qū ) of the government- direct city of Taoyuan in northwestern Taiwan . Until December 25, 2014, the district was a separate city in Taoyuan County.
location
Daxi is located in the Dahan valley about 30 km southwest of Taipei . Its center is on a terrace above the eastern right bank of the river. In the east and south, the district extends to the wooded foothills of the Xueshan mountain range, which reach heights of up to 667 meters. Here is on a lake Cihu the mausoleum Chiang Kai-shek .
The Shimen Reservoir is located on the southern border of the Fuxing District . Other neighboring districts are Longtan and Pingzhen in the west, Bade in the north (all belonging to the city of Taoyuan), Yingge in the northeast and Sanxia in the east (both New Taipei ).
Daxi is located on Highway 3 , which connects Taipei with the metropolitan areas of western Taiwan. The district has no rail connection.
history
The valley of the Dahan was originally settled by members of the Atayal and Ketagalan who called the place Takoham . Daxi kept this name in different variations such as Dakukan , Dakekan or Daikekan until the beginning of the 20th century.
The first Chinese settlers arrived in the 18th century. In the 19th century, Daxi developed into an important trading center, from where mainly agricultural products from the surrounding area were shipped to Taipei and Tamsui . The development of the city was favored by the Lin merchant family, one of the richest families in Taiwan, who fled to Daxi in 1803 from armed conflict around Taipei. After the construction of the railway, which ran further west, in 1909, inland shipping on the Dahan and with it the Daxi trading center lost its importance. In the 20th century, Daxi was an independent city in Taoyuan County; after its conversion into a city directly under the government on December 25, 2014, Daxi received the status of a district.
