The Universal Corporation is a US-based wholesale company . Universal trades in raw tobacco , mainly the Flue-Cured and Burley varieties, and counts Altria among its main customers. The company Socotab, which is 49% owned by Universal, processes Oriental Leaf tobacco from Turkish, Macedonian, Bulgarian or Greek production. Ready-to-use cigarettes or other fully processed tobacco products are not part of the Universals product range.

history

In 1918, the Universal Leaf Tobacco Company was first entered in the commercial register. Nine years later, in 1927, the company's shares were traded on the NYSE . During the economic crisis of the 1930s, the company countered the general downturn with programs for cost optimization and the processing of larger volumes, but expansion into foreign markets, namely China and Canada, was able to continue. After the opening of the first branch in what was then Rhodesia in 1938, the international business was further expanded. By sanctions by the UN of the Rhodesian market has been largely inaccessible in the 1960s. In 1990 the German dealer Gebrüder Kulenkampff with branches in Brazil and Turkey was taken over.
