The oriental curlew ( Glareola maldivarum ) is a bird from the subfamily of the curlew- like (Glareolidae).
It occurs to the east in Asia , in the extreme south of Siberia , Mongolia and China , Taiwan , India , Sri Lanka , the Philippines , also in western Japan and on the Ryūkyū Islands . Breeds have also been detected in southern Pakistan and Borneo . It winters in the Maldives , in India and Southeast Asia to Indonesia , New Guinea to Australia . She can occasionally be seen as a random visitor in Madagascar, the Seychelles and Mauritius.
The range includes steppes , open grasslands , dry bare habitats near wetlands , floodplains or mudflats .
description
The oriental curlew is 23-25 cm tall and weighs between 59 and 95 g. The wingspan is 58-64 cm. The top is olive brown with a white rump , the neck is set off in ocher color with a narrow black collar. The chest is brown and peach-colored merges into the white belly. The legs are gray, the forked tail black with a black ribbon . In flight you can see red on the wings .

The male's call is described as a sharp “kyik”, similar to that of the red-winged curlew .
Way of life
The diet consists of insects and other arthropods on the ground, especially grasshoppers , crickets and beetles , including winged termites . They hunt in flight like terns .
The breeding season is between April and June. The nests are located in loose colonies on open areas, preferably on burned-down grass surfaces or grassy river islands .
Northeastern populations overwinter as long-distance migrants mainly in Southeast Asia and Indonesia.
Danger
The oriental curlew is not considered to be endangered ( Least Concern ).
