Jiaoxi ( Chinese 礁溪 鄉 , Pinyin Jiāoxī xiāng , Tongyong Pinyin Jiaosi Siang ) is a rural community in northeastern Yilan County in the Republic of China, Taiwan .
location
Jiaoxi is located in the northern section of Yilan County. The eastern part belongs to the Yilan Plain , an extensive alluvial plain formed by sediment deposits from the Lanyang River and other rivers. The west of Jiaoxi is one of the foothills of the Xueshan Mountains . In the east, the municipality is only separated from the Pacific coast by a narrow strip of land about 400 to 850 meters wide . The neighboring communities are Zhuangwei in the southeast, Yilan City in the south, Yuanshan in the southwest, Toucheng in the northeast, and the Wulai and Pinglin districts of New Taipei in the northwest. The east-west extension is about 19.5 kilometers, and the maximum north-south extension about 8 kilometers.
history
The first Han Chinese settlers settled permanently in the area of today's Jiaoxi from 1773 during the reign of Qianlong . These first immigrants came from Nanjing (Zhangzhou) in Fujian Province . The original Austronesian population was gradually displaced either to the western mountains or further south by the new settlers. In 1812, at the time of Jiaqing , the area formally came under Qing administration. In 1920, during the Japanese rule (1895–1945), the village of Jiaoxi ( Chinese 礁溪 庄 , Pinyin Jiāoxī zhuāng ) was established here. When Taiwan became part of the Republic of China in 1945 , it became the rural community of Jiaoxi , from 1950 in the newly established Yilan County.
Residents
With a population of just over 35,000 (2020), Jiaoxi ranked sixth among the 12 municipalities in Yilan County. At the end of 2019, 327 indigenous peoples lived in Jiaoxi, equivalent to around 0.9% of the population.

Mineral water is extracted from Jiaoxi's springs.

particularities
Jiaoxi is particularly known for its natural attractions. These include the hot springs, around which a real bathing culture with numerous hotels has developed. Nature can be explored on various hiking trails. The most famous are the Old Paoma Trail ( 跑馬 古道 ), the Wufengqi Waterfall Trail ( 五峰旗 瀑布 步道 ), the Shengmu (Maria) Trail ( 聖母 峰 登山 步道 ), and the Linmei Shihpan Trail ( 林 美 石 磐步道 ). The latter leads to the waterfall of the same name ( ), which consists of three cascades separated from each other . Near the waterfall is the small Catholic Shengmu Chapel ( 五峰旗 聖母 朝聖 地 - "Wufengqi-Marien pilgrimage site" ) , designed in the style of a small Chinese temple of heaven . Another waterfall is the Houdongkeng waterfall ( 猴 洞 坑 瀑布 , Hóu dòng kēng pùbù - "monkey cave waterfall") in the village of Baiyun, which only has water during the rainy season. Lake Longtan ( 龍潭 湖 , Lóngtán hú ) in the village of the same name is the largest of the five lakes in Yilan County, with an area of around 17 hectares.
In Xietian Temple ( 協天廟 , Xiétiān Miao ) in the village Dazhong is Guan Yu worshiped. The temple dates back to 1803 and was expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Yuqing Temple ( 玉 清宮 , Yùqīng gōng ) is a temple complex for the worship of the "Jade Emperor" Yu Di from 1976.
Every year, the dragon boat race in Erlong village ( 二 龍 競渡 - "Erlong race, two-dragon race") attracts tourists.
