Luodong ( Chinese  羅 東鎮 , Pinyin Luódōng Zhèn , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Lô-tong-tìn ) is a township ( Chinese   , Pinyin Zhèn ) in the district of Yilan in the northeast of the Republic of China (Taiwan) . Luodong has the smallest area and at the same time the greatest population density of all municipalities in Taiwan.

Location and history

Luodong is not far from the Pacific coast in the Yilan Plain east of the Xueshan Mountains . Due to its location, the area was not settled by Chinese immigrants until the beginning of the 19th century. The name of the community is derived from the place name Lutung from the language of the original inhabitants of the Kavalan tribe who previously lived here . The place, which was originally characterized by agriculture, became an important processing and transshipment point for the timber felled in the mountains during the Japanese rule over Taiwan , which was transported by the Luodong forest railway from the mountains, which resulted in population growth and urbanization. After the end of logging in 1982, the timber industry and transport quickly lost importance.

meaning

As a result of decades of urbanization, the Luodong area has merged with the neighboring city of Yilan . After the end of the timber industry, Luodong is now mainly important as a business and shopping center and is connected to the metropolises of northern Taiwan via the national road 5 and a railway line.
