The Erebidae are a butterfly family from the superfamily of the Noctuoidea . The Erebidae were regarded as a subfamily of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae) until 2005 , but have been recognized almost consistently as a family since then. It contains almost all owl butterflies with quadrifin wing veins. This includes the smallest as well as the largest owl butterflies. According to the number of species, this family is the most species-rich among the butterflies.
Quadrifine wing veins
Almost all moths of the Erebidae family have wing veins called quadrifin . The cubital vein divides three times in the Erebidae and thus reaches four terminal branches. This differs their wing veins from those of the moths of the Noctuidae family, which only show three terminal branches. Their wing veins are called trifin .
Molecular genetic analysis
In 2010 and 2011, two molecular genetic studies were published that confirmed the division of the Noctuoidea into the two families Erebidae and Noctuidae .
