The nettle-beaked owl ( Hypena proboscidalis ), also known as the common nettle-beak owl , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 28 to 38 millimeters. The basic color of the forewings varies from gray-brown to yellowish brown. The outer and inner transverse lines stand out darkly, while the inner one bends towards the front edge . The wavy line is broad and also dark, but sometimes indistinct. There are no flaws. A dark shadow can often be seen below the very pointed apex . The hind wings are gray-brown without drawing. The proboscis of the moths is well developed. The antennae of the males are ciliated. The very long palps , which are stretched out like a trunk, are striking . The scientific name of the species is derived from this behavior from the Latin proboscis  = "trunk".

egg

The spherical egg is covered with 13 strong, straight longitudinal ribs, all of which reach the micropyl zone. In addition, 15 to 16 are also straight, but less developed transverse ribs on the surface. The egg is initially green in color, which changes to a dark brown before the young caterpillars hatch.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are greenish in color and have a dark back line, whitish side back lines and white-yellow side stripes. Individual hairs protrude from the yellow-green point warts. The segment incisions are yellowish.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The nettle-billed owl is widespread in Europe, in the north up to the Arctic Circle . To the east, the distribution area extends to Japan . In the Alps it rises to heights of over 1600 meters. The animals can be found in deciduous, mixed and coniferous forests, riverside areas, on hedges, as well as in gardens and park landscapes.

Way of life

The day, crepuscular and nocturnal moths fly in climatically favorable areas in two generations, the first from May to July and the second from August to October. They visit flowers, bait and like to visit artificial light sources . The great nettle ( Urtica dioica ), on which they sometimes live socially, serves as a food plant .

Danger

The nettle-beaked owl is not uncommon in the German federal states and is not endangered according to the Red List .
