The Erebinae form a subfamily of the Erebidae . The type genus is Erebus . The name Erebus is derived from the Greek and means "from the darkness".
The subfamily includes the following tribe: Catephiini , Ophiusini , Catocalini and Euclidiini . Well-known butterfly species are the blue ribbon ( Catocala fraxini ), the red ribbon ( Catocala nupta ), the check day owl ( Euclidia mi ) and the brown day owl ( Euclidia glyphica ). The Catocalini in particular are among the particularly large moths with spans of up to 12 cm. The Euclidiini contain two common diurnal owls.
