China Southern Airlines Flight 3943 was a scheduled flight from Guangzhou to Guilin that ended on November 24, 1992 with the crash of a Boeing 737-300 on its approach to Guilin-Qifengling Airport . All 141 occupants were killed in the accident.
the accident
The crew of the China Southern Airlines aircraft that took off from Guangzhou-Baiyun Airport (old) had received clearance from air traffic control to descend to 2130 meters (7000 feet ) in order to then make a visual approach to runway 36 at Guilin-Qifengling Airport perform. During the descent, the power of the engines was reduced from the automatic throttle control (autothrottle) to idle thrust.
When the pilots leveled up at 7,000 feet, the automatic thrust control increased the power of the engines again to maintain speed. However, unnoticed by the crew, only the thrust lever for the left engine moved, while the thrust lever for the right engine 2 remained in the idle position. Due to the asymmetrical distribution of thrust, the Boeing 737 tipped over the right wing and went into an uncontrolled dive . It hit near Liutang at 7:52 am.
With 141 fatalities, the accident is after the China Northwest Airlines flight 2303 the second worst airplane accident in the People's Republic of China to date .
