The Guyana Zoological Park is a zoological garden in Georgetown , the capital of the South American state of Guyana . It is located in the Bourda district on Vlissingen Road at the corner of Regent Street.

history

The first plans for an animal park on the site of today's zoo exist as early as 1880, but met resistance from the Royal Agricultural Society. On January 1, 1952, the Guyana Zoological Park was officially opened as a zoo. The grounds of the zoo were previously part of the Georgetown Botanical Gardens .

A zoo partnership exists with the Calgary Zoo . Contacts between the two zoos have existed since 1997.

Animal species

The main focus of the zoo is the wildlife of Guyana. Caribbean manatees , a species of manatee, have lived in a pond on the property since 1895. Today's Caribbean manatees in the zoo are descendants of these animals. You swim through the zoo in a canal. The longest-lived animals at Georgetown Zoo are a pair of harpies , which have been part of the zoo since 1952 and are still living there as of 2010. However, one of the harpies only has one wing left after being gunshot. Other animals at the zoo include Arrauschildkröten , capybaras , tapirs , Frans turtles , large anacondas , green tree boa , jabirus , jaguars , hinged tortoises of the species Kinosternon scorpioides , king vulture , white caiman , pumas , giant otters , Rotgesichtklammeraffen , showers Rattlesnakes and white-faced saki .

rating

The zoo is praised for its educational programs that bring students closer to nature. With entry prices equivalent to less than one euro (as of 2010), it is considered to be one of the cheapest zoos in the world, but the inappropriate accommodation of animals, for example, has been criticized. As of March 2010, Lonely Planet writes: The garden's zoo has a large collection of fascinating creatures kept in troublingly small and neglected cages (translation: The park's zoo has a large collection of fascinating animals that are kept in worryingly small and neglected cages ).
