Geographical location in Mauritius | ||

With 84,200 inhabitants (as of 2005), Curepipe is the fourth largest city on the island of Mauritius and is located on a plateau in the center of the island in the Plaines Wilhems district .
There is no guaranteed explanation for the name. One of the explanations is that travelers from the harbor in Mahébourg to Port Louis stopped here to clean their pipes. Hence “Cure” and “Pipe” (French: curer sa pipe ). Over the years a small town has formed there. In the middle lies the extinct volcanic crater Trou aux Cerfs ( German deer hole , 200 m diameter, 85 m deep), which can be viewed from a vantage point with an attached parking lot. About five kilometers to the south is the largest water reservoir on the island, the Mare aux Vacoas .
