About this picture

Black River ( French Rivière Noire ) is a district of Mauritius on the west side of the island. The Tamarin Falls are a tourist attraction . The district capital is Bambous . Before that, it was tamarin . It is the third largest district in Mauritius by area, but the smallest in terms of population. The area impresses with its tropical forests, which are unique in Mauritius, including those at the Black River Pass.

Communities

Mauritius is divided into villages ("Village Council Areas") (VCA) for administrative purposes. The following table lists the VCA which are (at least partially) in the Black River District. The boundaries of the districts are not congruent with those of the municipalities. Municipalities are therefore sometimes assigned to two or three districts. There are 13 parishes (VCA) and two districts (Ward) in the Black River District.

tourism

In the meantime, several fishing villages such as Flic-en-Flac , Tamarin and Le Morne have been converted into tourist places. Tamarin is the only area where surfing is possible during the months of July and August. Flic-en-Flac has the longest beach on the island. Le Morne gained notoriety when slaves who had escaped during the colonial period first hid on the neighboring mountain and finally committed suicide because they were unable to escape.

Le Morne is now a popular area for kite and windsurfers .
