Mahébourg is the district capital of Grand Port , a district of Mauritius . The former capital has 15,753 inhabitants and is located in the east of the island, six kilometers from the island's only airport, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport . Mahébourg has, due to its location by the sea, a pronounced tourism, which is one of the main sources of income for the city in addition to trade.
history
Mahébourg was founded as a small settlement in 1589 by the Dutch during their brief period on the island. The current name of the city comes from Mahé de La Bourdonnais , a French admiral and governor during colonial times. Mahébourg was the island's capital for a long time until a large part of the population was killed by a malaria epidemic ; then Port Louis took over the rank of capital. Due to the large proportion of buildings from the colonial era, Mahébourg has a special flair.

Cultural monuments
In Mahébourg there are two cultural monuments that are under monument protection . The Grand Port Battle Memorial at the Pointe des Régates is a memorial commemorating the 1810 naval battle of Grand Port . The Maison Historique de Grand Port, a colonial-style building from 1772, has housed the History and Naval Museum since 1950, which shows relics of the 1810 naval battle of Grand Port, among other things.
