The Mare aux Vacoas is the largest drinking water reservoir in Mauritius and is located about five kilometers south of the town of Curepipe in the Plaines Wilhems district .
The approximately rectangular, almost three square kilometers large dam, which is also used for energy generation, has about two kilometers long sides in a north-west-south-east direction and in its south-east corner a 100-meter-long dam, which was built in 1885. The outflow to the Indian Ocean is the Rivière du Poste , which drains to the southeast . The entire lake is surrounded by forest, including pine trees. The area is fenced and therefore not accessible to the public.
