Kenneth Gibson (born September 8, 1961 in Paisley ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Gibson attended Bellahouston Academy and then Stirling University , where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics.

Political career

In the 1987 general election , Gibson ran as a candidate for the SNP for the constituency of Monkland East , but was clearly defeated by Labor candidate John Smith and only achieved the third highest number of votes after the candidate of the Conservative Party . Between 1992 and 1996, Gibson member of the district council of Glasgow, and between 1995 and 1999 the city council of Glasgow . In 1999 his mother was elected as successor to the city council. In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999 Gibson ran for the constituency of Glasgow Pollok , but could not prevail against Johann Lamont of the Labor Party. Due to the election result, Gibson received one of four mandates on the regional electoral list for the SNP in the Glasgow electoral region and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament .

In the parliamentary elections in 2003 Gibson ran again for Glasgow Pollok, but won in this election after Lamont and Tommy Sheridan of the Scottish Socialist Party only the third highest share of the vote. Since he was only fourth on the SNP's regional electoral list, he lost his mandate. In 2007 Gibson ran for the constituency of Cunninghame North and won the direct mandate with only 48 votes ahead of Labor candidate Allan Wilson . In the parliamentary elections in 2011 and 2016 defended Gibson's mandate.
