Political career

Between 1992 and 1999 Wilson was a member of the executive branch of the Scottish Labor Party and from 1986 to 1996 campaign manager of the House of Commons Brian Wilson . In the first Scottish general election in 1999, Wilson first ran for national elections. He applied for the direct mandate of the constituency of Cunninghame North and was able to win the direct mandate with a clear lead over the SNP candidate Kay Ullrich . Wilson held various positions in parliament during this term. From November 2000 to March 2001 he was Deputy State Secretary for Culture and Sport, then until November 2001 for Culture, Art and Sport and finally for Education and Development of Rural Regions. In the 2003 parliamentary elections he defended his mandate. Wilson initially retained his position as Deputy Secretary of State for Education and Rural Development and was appointed Deputy Secretary of State for Business and Lifelong Learning in October 2004. In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 2007 he lost his seat to the SNP candidate Kenneth Gibson and resigned from the Scottish Parliament. Gibson won this election by just 48 votes, the narrowest lead in any constituency in these elections. Due to the tight result, the Labor Party initially reserved the right to contest the result, but then decided not to. In the Scottish general elections in 2011 , Wilson ran again for Cunninghame North, but this time Gibson was clearly defeated.
