Dumfries was a constituency for the Scottish Parliament . It was introduced in 1999 as one of nine constituencies in the electoral region of South of Scotland , which was redesigned and renamed South Scotland as part of the constituency revision in 2011 . Here the constituency of Dumfries was abolished. Large parts of the old constituency became the new constituency Dumfriesshire , the western outskirts and the western part of the city of Dumfries were added to the county of Galloway and West Dumfries . The constituency comprised parts of the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway and sent one MP. In the 2001 census survey, a total of 80,784 people lived within its borders.
