Elaine Murray

Elaine Murray (born December 22, 1954 in Hitchin ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Labor Party .

Life

Although Murray was born in England , she is the daughter of Scottish parents and grew up in Edinburgh . She studied chemistry at the University of Edinburgh and graduated with a master's degree . She then did her PhD in physical chemistry at Cambridge University and took a post-doctoral position at the Cavendish Laboratory there. After another postdoctoral fellowship at the Royal Free Hospital in London , Murray moved to the Institute of Food Research in Reading . From 1992 to 1999 she was a lecturer in chemistry at the Open University . Elaine Murray is married and a mother of three.

Political career

Between 1990 and 1993 Murray advised the Labor MP in the European Parliament Alex Smith . In 1994 she was elected to the Strathclyde District Council for the Labor Party, and in 1995 to the South Ayrshire Regional Council. In the first Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999 as well as in 2003 and 2007 , she won the direct mandate of her constituency of Dumfries , as well as in the Scottish parliamentary elections in 2011 for the newly created constituency of Dumfriesshire .

When the cabinet was changed in 2001, Murray was appointed Deputy Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sports and held that position until the end of the legislature. In the Labor Party's shadow cabinet, she served as State Secretary for Enterprises until 2008 and Minister for Rural Affairs and the Environment between 2008 and 2011. In the Labor Party's shadow cabinet, Murray has been designated Minister for Housing and Transport since 2011. In September 2011, Murray announced he was running for the position of deputy party leader, but withdrew her candidacy a month later.
