Murray Tosh (born September 1, 1950 in Ayr ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Conservative Party .

Life

Tosh attended Kilmarnock Academy and then studied history and politics at the University of Glasgow . Then he went to Jordanhill College of Education , where he earned his teaching license. In the following years Tosh worked as a teacher at various schools.

Political career

Tosh was initially a member of the Liberal Party and during his time at Glasgow University President of the Glasgow University Liberal Club . In the general election in October 1974 , he ran for the Liberal Party in the constituency of Ayr , but with a share of around 6.3% of the vote , he clearly missed entry into the British lower house . He then joined the Conservative Party and ran in the 1983 general election for the direct mandate of the Glasgow Hillhead constituency and received the third highest number of votes. Between 1987 and 1996, Tosh served on the Kyle and Carrick District Council .

In the first Scottish general election in 1999, Tosh ran in the constituency of Cunninghame South , but received only 11.4% of the vote. However, since Tosh was also listed on the regional electoral list of the Conservatives for the electoral region South of Scotland in third place, he received one of the four list mandates of the Conservatives in this electoral region and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament as a result of the election result . In the 2003 general election , Tosh applied for the direct mandate of the Dumbarton constituency and received the fourth largest share of the vote. However, due to his listing on the regional electoral list for the electoral region West of Scotland , he again moved into parliament via a list mandate. In the following parliamentary elections in 2007 , Tosh stood in the constituency of Dumfries and received the second highest number of votes. Since he was listed on the regional electoral list of the Conservatives for South Scotland only in fourth place, he received no list mandate and resigned from parliament.
