It was introduced in 1999 as one of nine constituencies in the West of Scotland constituency , which was redesigned and renamed West Scotland as part of the constituency revision in 2011 . Small changes were made to the northwest borders of the constituency of Dumbarton. The constituency includes parts of the Council Areas Argyll and Bute and West Dunbartonshire . The largest cities within the borders are Alexandria , Dumbarton and Helensburgh . The constituency sends a representative.
The constituency covers an area of 657.2 km 2 . In the 2011 census survey, a total of 71,957 people lived within its borders.
