location

The approximately 22.4 hectare Espenloch-Hintere Halde nature reserve is part of the Schönbuch and Glemswald and Obere Gäue nature reserves . It is located on the southwestern edge of the Rammert on the Lettenkohlschicht der Gäue with a sequence of stages from middle Keuper over Gypsum Keuper and colorful marl to the top layer of house sandstone . From the Middle Ages to the 17th century, it was used as a wine-growing area. After the need for wine decreased significantly due to the Thirty Years' War , the vineyards that were left open were converted into hay meadows . The steeper sections on the upper slope edges were used less agriculturally and were subject to succession up to the emergence of forest communities.

The area is located at an altitude of 480  m above sea level. NN . There is a tourist development to the north via the Hirrlingen natural history path, from there a circular hiking trail of the hiking trail network leads to the nature reserve.

Flora and fauna

The extensive cultivation of the cultural landscape with its unfertilized hay meadows, sheep pastures and fruit tree meadows led to typical plant communities such as sage and oat meadows , semi-dry lawns , fringing communities and orchards, all of which are interlocked or nested like a mosaic. In between there are individual small root crop fields and some parcels that have fallen fallow. Brandy orchid , marsh orchid and lesser orchid grow on the poor grass together with fringed gentian and globular flower . Feathered inhabitants of the orchards are green woodpecker , great spotted woodpecker and wryneck , under the ground-nesting birds are grasshopper warbler and tree pipit found and in the hedges broods of Red-backed Shrike .

Protection purpose

The main protection purpose is the improvement and care of the wetlands, semi-arid lawns and orchards, together with their diverse and sometimes endangered flora and fauna.

Contiguous protected areas

The NSG Espenloch-Hintere Halde is part of the FFH area Rammert and is completely surrounded by the landscape protection area Mittleres Starzeltal .
