The Rappenberg is a 40.12 hectare (ha) nature and landscape protection area in Baden-Württemberg , in the south of the city of Rottenburg am Neckar , in the east and north of the districts incorporated there, designated by the Tübingen Regional Council in accordance  with the ordinance of September 15, 1995 Weiler and Dettingen in the Tübingen district . Around 15.8 hectares are accounted for by the Rappenberg nature reserve listed under NSG number 4.264 and the remaining 24.3 hectares with LSG number 4.16.020 by the Rappenberg landscape conservation area . At the same time, the two neighboring protected areas are located in the 2739.5 hectare European bird protection area Mittlerer Rammert with the protection area number 7519401 and the 2886.0 hectare FFH area Rammert with the protection area number 7519342.

location

The 500 to 558  m high protected area Rappenberg still belongs to the natural area Schönbuch and Glemswald . In the north and east it is framed by the immediately adjacent Rammert landscape protection area , with it being located on the southern slope of the Keuperhöhen range with the transition to the Oberen Gäuen . The Katzenbach-Dünnbachtal nature reserve is only a few kilometers south .

Until the middle of the 18th century, there was intensive cultivation of small plots on the area with viticulture and agriculture in the upper slope area, after which most areas were converted into meadows. In the lower slope area high-stemmed fruit trees were planted, under which semi -arid lawns rich in orchids developed.

After the Second World War, use slackened further, so that, as part of the natural succession, increased encroachment and shading of the sites starting from the Rammert forest edge became noticeable. Further use of the sage and oat meadows as horse pasture could not slow down the expansion of the sloes and in places led to a severe impairment of the sward through damage caused by footsteps , so that human intervention and a maintenance concept were inevitable for the preservation.

Flora and fauna

In their tree hollows, the tree meadows provide habitat for 34 breeding bird species, including several species of woodpecker, nuthatch , titmouse, redtail, as well as bats and their prey, including numerous butterflies, wild bees and other insects. The orchid species include, among others, several orchids, mosquito handelwort , fly ragwort and the goat's tongue . Occurrences of the white forest hyacinth , the vinegar rose , the rape-leaved rose and the wild wine were also found.

Protection purpose

The protection purpose is the preservation and care of the small-scale mosaic of plant communities as a habitat for numerous, even rarer, animal and plant species.
