description

Vegetative characteristics

The Raublättrige rose is an upright, deciduous shrub that reaches heights of 0.5 to 3.5 meters. Sometimes it forms runners . It has arching and often frosted branches. The similar, strong, slender spines are only slightly curved or straight and their attachment surface is 4 to 8 millimeters wide. Needle-shaped bristles are also rare.

The alternate leaves are arranged in a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is covered with stalk glands and has short hairs. The leaf blade is pinnate five to seven parts. The rigid leaflets are 2 to 4.5 centimeters long and 1.3 to 3 centimeters wide, relatively large and mostly elliptical. Its edge is simply sawed sharply. The upper side is dark green, bare and matt or slightly shiny, the underside somewhat hairy and provided with a strongly pronounced vein network.

Generative characteristics

Flowers and leaves

The flowering time is in June. The flowers stand individually or in pairs to four in dold-like inflorescences .

The hermaphroditic flowers are about 5 centimeters in diameter and are radially symmetrical and five-fold with a double flower envelope . They are covered with stalk glands and bristles. The five sepals are turned back after blooming and fall off prematurely. There are many glands on her back. The outer sepals have linear-lanceolate, toothed or ciliate feathers. The five petals are colored pink or dark red. The wide stylus canals , which occupy about half of the discus, are covered with broad, woolly, hat-like scar heads.

The leathery and, when ripe, scarlet rose hips are almost spherical with a length of about 1.5 centimeters.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 42.

Occurrence

The Raublättrige rose occurs in Central and Southern Europe. The distribution area extends from the south of France over the Jura and the Alps to the German low mountain range, in addition it includes the Carpathian Mountains and the Balkan Peninsula .

The Raublättrige rose grows in dry, warm locations, forest edges, in bushes and hedges as well as on stony slopes. In the mountains it penetrates to altitudes of 1,100 meters. Chalky subsoil is preferred. It is a character species of the Berberidion association, but also occurs in plant communities of the Quercion pubescentis or Erico-Pinion associations.

Systematics

The valid name is Rosa marginata Wallr. Rosa marginata was first published in 1815 by the German botanist Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Wallroth in Annus botanicus, ... , page 68.

Synonyms for Rosa marginata Wallr. are: Rosa jundzillii Besser , Rosa marginata auct., Rosa approximata Déségl. , Rosa decora Déségl. , Rosa didieri F.Gérard , Rosa extensa Déségl. & Ozanon , Rosa flexuosa A.Rau , Rosa glandulosa Besser non Bellardi , Rosa godetii Gren. , Rosa hampeana Griseb. , Rosa jundzilliana Besser nom. illeg., Rosa nemorivaga Déségl. , Rosa pugetii Déségl. , Rosa reticulata A. Nyman , Rosa flexuosa subsp. subolida (Déségl.) Nyman . The specific epithet marginata means bordered. The specific epithet jundzillii honors the Polish-Lithuanian botanist and doctor Stanisław Bonifacy Jundziłł (1761–1847).

The Raublättrige rose is very similar to some crosses of the vinegar rose ( Rosa gallica ) and the dog rose ( Rosa canina ), so it could be a bastard that spread even further north than the vinegar rose.

Presumably, the rogue-leaved rose is a highly polyphyletic complex with great variability in many characteristics. The taxonomic status of this rose species has not yet been clarified.
