Oberes Steinach is a nature reserve designated by the ordinance of March 15, 1982 (NSG number 4.095) in a wide section in the Neckar valley between Rottenburg am Neckar , Kiebingen and Tübingen in Baden-Württemberg , Germany . The nature reserve south of the Neckar lies at an altitude of 330  m above sea level. NN in the districts "Kiebingen" and "Bühl". On the opposite side north of the Neckar, separated by two flood dams and the river, there is the similarly structured nature reserve Burglehen .

Location and history

The approximately 7.5 hectare nature reserve Oberes Steinach belongs to the natural area Schönbuch and Glemswald . The Neckar valley section with the protected gravel pit is located in the Tübingen step-edge bay between the bottlenecks of the Rottenburger Porta Suevica and that of Derendingen . The ten kilometer long and up to three kilometer long valley plain with layers of clay and marl of the Gipskeuper is framed by the ridges of the Rammert and Spitzberg as well as the Gäuf areas. The gravel layers in the valley date from the Young Pleistocene and until the 18th century the course of the Neckar was still freely meandering without artificial regulation. Bends in the river, oxbow lakes and floodplains could alternate and the river was between 30 and 50% longer due to the winding course in this section.

Between 1779 and 1966, various measures were taken to regulate and straighten the course of the river, which together with the construction of barrages and power stations resulted in an extensive reduction in the natural river system. Upstream is the Kiebingen hydropower plant , and downstream the river power plant near Tübingen-Hirschau .

Gravel has been dredged in the area since 1937. The resulting water areas together with the different bank areas have developed into suitable biotopes for a whole range of migratory and breeding birds. Its relevance as a breeding and resting area has increased with the size of the lake landscape. As early as 1969, a year-round survey by the German Federation for Bird Protection revealed a total of 181 bird species in the reed beds , silt and open water areas, steep banks and the meadow forest . Lake Coinciding located with the expansion of the nearby Kiebingen increased use as recreational and bathing area, leading to a threat of resident since 1973 colony of sand martins led, so that from 1979 onwards concrete plans and measures were introduced for designation as a nature reserve. On March 15, 1982, the Protected Area Ordinance was announced with correspondingly restrictive sections; camping, storing, swimming, boating, lighting open fireplaces and setting up sales stands are prohibited. Hunting and fishing were also restricted.

Flora Fauna

When Stretch Upper Steinach a special habitat for birds originated by a variety of different bank areas. Worth mentioning are both an approximately 10 × 80 m long reed belt with bulrushes and a 50 m wide reed-willow biotope and an alder-willow forest with pronounced thickets. This juxtaposition of different areas favors the biodiversity of ground, niche breeders and park birds.

The species in the area that are also on the Red List include bluethroat , bittern , osprey , short-eared owl and night heron .

Protection purpose

The protection purpose includes the preservation of the habitat for a variety of bird species, some of which are considered endangered in Baden-Württemberg. This includes the conservation of the steep banks, shallow water zones and reed stocks as necessary resting, feeding and breeding areas for the threatened bird world.
