West Scotland is one of the eight Scottish electoral regions for election to the Scottish Parliament . It was created on the basis of the Scotland Act of 1998 under the name West of Scotland . In the course of the revision of the electoral regions in 2011, the name was changed to West Scotland , with only minor changes to the external borders. In contrast, the constituencies were redesigned and their number increased from nine to ten. West Scotland includes areas of the Council Areas Argyll and Bute , East Dunbartonshire , East Renfrewshire , Inverclyde , North Ayrshire , Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire in the west of Scotland. The first elections took place during the parliamentary elections on May 6, 1999.

The West Scotland region is bordered clockwise and starting in the north by the Highlands and Islands , Mid Scotland and Fife , Central Scotland , Glasgow and South Scotland .

Geographical breakdown

The West of Scotland region comprised nine constituencies. The constituencies were named and tailored to the constituencies of the British Parliament . Each constituency has a representative determined by majority voting . In addition, seven additional members are elected. In the course of the revision of the constituencies in 2011, the constituencies were redesigned and the number increased from nine to ten.
