Ruth Maguire is a Scottish politician and a member of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Maguire was born in the Scottish Highlands as the daughter of the politician and former police officer John Finnie . She attended Sabhal Mòr Ostaig College on the Isle of Skye and then took on various positions in the computer industry. Most recently she ran her own therapeutic practice. Maguire is married and a mother of two.

Political career

In 2012, Maguire was for the SNP in the constituency Irvine West in the Council of North Ayrshire selected. After her party colleague Margaret Burgess , who held the mandate of the constituency of Cunninghame South , did not run for the Scottish general elections in 2016 , Maguire was nominated as successor. On election day, she received the largest share of the vote and subsequently entered the Scottish Parliament . In Parliament, Maguire is a member of the Education and Skills and Social Security committees .

Her father John Finnie, meanwhile a member of the Scottish Green Party , received a list mandate for the Highlands and Islands electoral region in the 2016 general election . This makes John Finnie and Ruth Maguire the first direct relatives to represent different parties in parliament at the same time.
