John Finnie (* 31 December 1956 in the region Lochaber ) is a Scottish politician of the Scottish Green Party and former member of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Finnie attended Achnacarry Primary School , Lochaber High School and Oban High School . He then trained as a police officer and worked for the police from 1976 to 2006.

Political career

In 2007 Finnie was elected to the Highland Regional Council. For the first time Finnie ran in the British general election 2010 to national elections. In his constituency of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey , however, he received only the third highest number of votes and thus missed the entry into the British House of Commons . In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 2011 , Finnie applied for a mandate from the Highlands and Islands electoral region . As a result of the election result, Finnie won one of the seven regional mandates and moved into the Scottish Parliament for the first time .

Due to the rejection of the positive party congress resolution to join NATO in the event of Scotland's separation from the United Kingdom , Finnie and his party colleague Jean Urquhart left the SNP on October 23, 2012. During their time as non-party parliamentarians, both stated that they wanted to support large parts of the SNP policy.

Meanwhile a member of the Scottish Green Party , Finnie received a list mandate for the Highlands and Islands electoral region in the Scottish parliamentary elections in 2016 . His daughter, Ruth Maguire , won a direct mandate from the constituency of Cunninghame South for the SNP in the same elections . This makes John Finnie and Ruth Maguire the first direct relatives to represent different parties in parliament at the same time. In August 2019, Finnie announced that she did not want to run again in the new Scottish Parliament elections scheduled for 2021.
