Jean Urquhart (born May 17, 1949 ) is a Scottish politician and former member of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Urquhart attended Lindsay High School in Bathgate and Newbattle Abbey College in Dalkeith . From 1973 she ran a restaurant in Ullapool .

Political career

For the first time, Urquhart ran in the 1999 parliamentary elections to national elections. In her constituency of Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross , however, she received only the third highest share of the vote and thus missed the entry into the newly created Scottish Parliament . In 2003 Urquhart was elected to the Lochbroom Regional Council. She has been a council member for the Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh region since 2007 . In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 2011 , she applied for the direct mandate of the Shetland constituency , but was again only able to record the third largest share of the vote. Since she was also on the regional electoral list of the SNP for the electoral region Highlands and Islands , she won one of the seven regional mandates as a result of the election result and moved into the Scottish Parliament for the first time.

Urquhart and her party colleague John Finnie left the SNP on October 23, 2012 due to the rejection of the positive party congress resolution to join NATO in the event of Scotland's separation from the United Kingdom . During their time as non-party parliamentarians, both stated that they wanted to support large parts of the SNP policy.
