Derek Mackay

Derek Mackay (born July 30, 1977 in Renfrew ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Mackay attended Kirklandneuk Primary School and Renfrew High School . He then studied at Glasgow University but dropped out to pursue politics. Mackay is married and has a father of two.

Political career

In 1994 Mackay joined the SNP. In the regional council elections in Renfrewshire in 1999, he ran for the first time and won a mandate. This made him the youngest male councilor in Scotland. Mackay was confirmed in the following two elections and chaired the council from 2007. Between 2003 and 2005 he also assisted the SNP MP Bruce McFee . In the 2011 parliamentary elections , Mackay ran for the first time to national elections. In his constituency of Renfrewshire North and West , he won the direct mandate in front of the Labor Party candidate and thus moved into the Scottish Parliament for the first time. In December 2011 Mackay took over the position of Secretary of State for Local Administration and Planning from his party colleague Aileen Campbell . On February 6, 2020, Mackay resigned hours before the Scottish budget was announced after it was revealed that he bombarded a 16-year-old boy with 270 messages after being friends with him on Facebook and Instagram .
