Michael Matheson (born September 8, 1970 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

At the Open University he obtained a bachelor's degree in applied social sciences and then a diploma. Matheson is married and has three sons.

Political career

For the first time Matheson came to the general election in 1997 for national elections. He represented the constituency of Hamilton North and Bellshill , but was clearly defeated by John Reid , the Labor Party candidate .

In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999 Matheson stood as a candidate for the SNP for the constituency of Falkirk West , but could only post the third-highest number of votes after the non-party Dennis Canavan and the Labor candidate. Due to the election result, however, he moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament as an envoy from the electoral region of Central Scotland via the regional list . In the SNP shadow cabinet of this legislative period, Matheson was designated as Deputy State Secretary for Justice. In the following parliamentary elections in 2003 Matheson ran again for Falkirk West. Although he received significantly fewer votes than Dennis Canavan, this time was able to unite the second highest number of votes before the Labor candidate. But again Matheson got a seat in parliament via the regional list. In a new shadow cabinet, Matheson held the position of Minister for Culture and Sport between September 2004 and 2006. After Dennis Canavan did not run for the parliamentary elections in 2007 , Matheson finally managed for the first time to obtain the direct mandate of the constituency, which he defended in the 2011 parliamentary elections. In 2011 Matheson was appointed Minister of Health. From November 2014 he was appointed Minister of Justice. Matheson defended his mandate in the 2016 elections by winning votes .
