British House of Commons

Canavan first appeared in the general election in October 1974 for the constituency of West Stirlingshire and won the direct mandate just before the candidate of the SNP . In the 1979 elections that followed , he defended his mandate. In the course of constituency reform in 1983, the West Stirlingshire constituency was dissolved. From then on, Canavan stood for the newly created constituency of Falkirk West . He won the constituency in the 1983 general election and defended his mandate in the 1987 , 1992 and 1997 elections .

Scottish Parliament

Although Canavan was an established politician in his constituency, he was not nominated for his constituency in Falkirk West in the 1999 Scottish general election . Canavan then left the Labor Party and ran as a non-party candidate. He achieved the best relative result of all candidates with a lead of around 12,200 votes over the candidate of the Labor Party and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament . Canavan ran in the 1999, 2000 and 2001 elections for First Minister and received three of the 123 votes. In the parliamentary elections that followed in 2003 , Canavan entered parliament with a clear lead of exactly 10,000 votes over Michael Matheson from the SNP . He also ran again in the elections for First Minister and received two of the total of 127 votes. At the 2007 parliamentary elections Canavan has not raced for more.

In 2010 his autobiography Let the People Decide was published .
