Sextile Iosif Puşcariu (born January 4, 1877 in Braşov , † May 5, 1948 in Bran ) was a Romanian Romanist and Romanist .

life and work

Sextil Pușcariu studied in Leipzig, Paris and Vienna. He received his doctorate from Gustav Weigand in Leipzig in 1900 on The Romanian Diminutive Suffixes (Leipzig 1899) and completed his habilitation in 1904 under Wilhelm Meyer-Lübke in Vienna with the script Latin Ti and Ki in Romanian, Italian and Sardinian (Leipzig 1904, annual reports of the Institute for Romanian Language to Leipzig 11). From 1905 to 1906 he headed the Romanian seminar at the University of Vienna . Then he was appointed to the Franz Joseph University in Chernivtsi , where he was associate professor from 1906 to 1908 and full professor of Romanian language and literature from 1908 to 1918 (also dean from 1914 to 1918). In 1918 he was Vice President of the National Council of Bukovina. In 1919 he became the first rector of the newly founded Romanian University of Cluj-Napoca . From 1926 he was full professor for Romanian language and literature at the University of Cluj-Napoca, where he set up the Museum of the Romanian Language and had Sever Pop as a student. In 1937 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . From 1940 he was President of the Romanian Institute in Germany founded at his urging in Berlin (1940–1944 and visiting professor in Berlin (1942–1944)). He became a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . From 1914 he was a full member of the Romanian Academy. From 1920 to 1948 he published the magazine Dacoromania . At the University of Cluj-Napoca, the Institutul de lingvistică și istorie literară was named after him.
