Maureen Watt (born June 23, 1951 in Aberdeen ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish National Party (SNP). She is married and a mother of two.

Watt grew up on a farm near Keith . She attended Keith Grammar School and then graduated from Strathclyde University with a bachelor's degree in politics . She was qualified to teach at the University of Birmingham and subsequently worked as a teacher in various locations. She later switched to the oil industry.

Political career

In the Scottish general election in 1999 Watt ran for the direct mandate of the constituency of West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine . She received the third highest number of votes behind the Liberal Democrat Mike Rumbles and the Conservative Ben Wallace and thus missed the entry into the newly created Scottish Parliament . In the 2003 general election , she ran in the Aberdeen South constituency and received the fourth largest share of the vote. On March 21, 2006, the member of the Moray constituency , Margaret Ewing , died, which is why by-elections were held in this constituency on April 27, 2006. In order to be able to stand for this election, the SNP MP for the electoral region of North East Scotland , Richard Lochhead , gave up his mandate. Watt slipped to this position by the end of the legislative period and thus moved into the Scottish Parliament for the first time . Watt was the first woman MP to take her oath in the north-east Scottish dialect . In the following general election in 2007 Watt ran again in the constituency of Aberdeen South, but could not prevail against the mandate holder Nicol Stephen . However, she was sent to Parliament for the first time after an election to represent the North East Scotland region. In the new cabinet , Watt was appointed State Secretary for Schools under Minister Fiona Hyslop and resigned in February 2009. In the course of the constituency reform, the constituency of Aberdeen South was dissolved and largely replaced by the newly created constituency of Aberdeen South and North Kincardine , for which Watt ran in the 2011 general election. She received the highest percentage of votes and thus won a direct mandate for the first time.
