Mike Rumbles

Mike Rumbles (born June 10, 1956 in South Shields ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Liberal Democrats . Rumbles attended St James School in Hebburn , Sunderland University Polytechnic and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst . He then worked for the British Army in the field of training and rose to the rank of major . Between 1995 and 1999 he held a senior position in the administration of Aberdeen College .

Political career

For the first time Rumbles appeared in the 1997 general election to national elections. In his constituency of Aberdeen North , however, he only received the fourth highest number of votes and thus missed entry into the British House of Commons . In the first Scottish general election in 1999, Rumbles ran in the constituency of West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine . He won the direct mandate in front of the Conservative Party candidate and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament . In the following parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2007 he defended his mandate. As part of the 2011 constituency reform, the West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine constituency was dissolved. For the 2011 general election , Rumbles applied for the direct mandate of the constituency of Aberdeenshire West , but was defeated by Dennis Robertson of the SNP and left parliament.

In 2005 Rumbles stood for election to the party leadership of the Scottish Liberal Democrats. He received 23.4% of the vote and was defeated by Nicol Stephen .
