Political career

For the first time McKelvie stood in the Scottish parliamentary elections in 2007 as a candidate for the SNP for the constituency of Hamilton South . Originally, John Wilson was intended for this , who already ran for the parliamentary elections in 2003 for this constituency, but stepped down in their favor. McKelvie was unable to prevail against Labor candidate Tom McCabe . However, since McKelvie was fifth on the SNP's regional electoral list for the electoral region of Central Scotland , she was one of the five SNP MPs who moved into Parliament for Central Scotland. In the wake of constituency reform in 2011, the constituency of Hamilton South was abolished and McKelvie ran in the 2011 general election for the newly created constituency of Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse . She won the direct mandate ahead of Tom McCabe and moved into parliament a second time. In the parliamentary elections in 2016 McKelvie defended her direct mandate.
