John Swinney

John Ramsey Swinney (born April 13, 1964 in Edinburgh ) is a Scottish politician ( SNP ) and the Education Minister of Scotland.

Life

Swinney was born in Edinburgh in 1964 and joined the Scottish National Party at the age of 15 . He later studied political science at the University of Edinburgh . He completed this with a master's degree .

John Swinney is married to a television reporter named Elizabeth Quigley. The common son Quigley and Swinney was born in October 2010, from a previous marriage Swinney had two children.

Political activity

In the British general elections in 1997 Swinney won a seat in the House of Commons in London , two years later in the Scottish general election a seat in the newly established Scottish Parliament . The mandate in the British Parliament has been held by another member of the SNP since the 2001 election, and Swinney was able to defend his seat in the Scottish Parliament in the 2003 , 2007 and 2011 elections.

From 1998 to 2000 John Swinney was the vice chairman of the SNP and chairman of the party for the next four years.

After the formation of an SNP government in 2007, he was Minister of Finance and Sustainable Growth in the Salmond I Cabinet and Minister of Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth in the Salmond II Cabinet formed after the 2011 election . After Nicola Sturgeon was elected First Minister to succeed Salmond in November 2014 , Swinney served in her first cabinet as Minister of Finance, Constitution and Economy and also took over her previous office as Deputy First Minister. He retained this in May 2016, the second Sturgeon cabinet , but switched to the post of education minister.

After the SNP won the Scottish parliamentary elections in 2011 , Swinney announced that the government would hold a referendum on Scotland's independence from the United Kingdom in the 2015 legislative period .
