Alex Neil (born August 22, 1951 in Patna ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish National Party .

Political career

Neil joined the Labor Party at the age of 16 . He studied economics at Dundee University . Neil was also active in the student organization of the Labor Party and also sat for some time. He then worked for the Labor Party, but resigned in 1976 to help found the Scottish Labor Party . In 1985 he resigned from the Scottish Labor Party and turned to the Scottish National Party (SNP). After the death of Robert McTaggart , the envoy of the Glasgow Central constituency , new elections were scheduled, in which Neil represented the SNP. However, he clearly missed the number of votes needed to win the mandate against Labor candidate Mike Watson and missed entry into the British House of Commons .

In the Scottish general elections in 1999 , Neil was a candidate for the SNP for the constituency of Kilmarnock and Loudoun , but was defeated by Margaret Jamieson of the Labor Party. On the basis of the election result, he moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament as an envoy from the electoral region of Central Scotland via the regional list . The SNP elected a new chairman in autumn 2000. Neil was up in this election, but lost with 547-262 votes to John Swinney . In the following parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2007 , Neil ran for the constituency of Hamilton North and Bellshill , but only won the second highest number of votes behind Michael McMahon of the Labor Party. In both cases, however, he again retained his seat in Parliament as an envoy from Central Scotland. For the 2011 general election , Neil was up for the constituency of Airdrie and Shotts and won a direct mandate for the first time against the Labor Party's longtime envoy Karen Whitefield . Neil defended his mandate in the subsequent elections in 2016 .

In February 2009, Neil was appointed Minister for Housing and Communities . After the 2011 general election, Neil initially held the position of Minister for Infrastructure and Investment. Between September 2012 and November 2014, he served as Minister of Health before assuming the position of Minister for Social Justice, Communities and Pensioners' Rights .
