Michael McMahon (born September 18, 1961 in Bellshill ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Labor Party .

McMahon attended Our Lady's High School in Motherwell and then graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with a bachelor's degree in social sciences .

Political career

In the Scottish general election in 1999 , McMahon ran as a Labor Party candidate for the constituency of Hamilton North and Bellshill . With a clear lead over the candidate of the SNP , he won the mandate and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament . In the following parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2007 he defended his mandate. As part of the 2011 constituency reform, the constituency of Hamilton North and Bellshill was dissolved. For this reason, McMahon went to the 2011 general election for the newly created constituency of Uddingston and Bellshill , in which large parts of the former constituency are absorbed. McMahon won the mandate by a narrow margin over the SNP candidate. In the end, McMahon was defeated by SNP candidate Richard Lyle in the 2016 elections and subsequently left the Scottish Parliament.
