description

With the exception of one student, all of them stand in front of their teachers, who are mostly bearded, who are sitting on stools. On one side, a teacher playing the lyre and his pupil, who is also playing the lyre, sit across from each other. In the center follows a teacher who is unrolling a scroll , and in front of him is a student practicing reading or reciting verses. On the far right, a staff in hand, sits a paidagogós . This is not a teacher, as the name suggests, but a kind of supervisor for children. On the other outside is a pair of awesome young, beardless teacher playing, his pupil standing in front of him. The central image on this page is another beardless young teacher holding a wax tablet in one hand and using a stylus to write with the other . The student standing in front of him is obviously learning to write. On the right there is another paidagogós seated to the right , who turns to the reading scene. School utensils such as musical instruments, but also drinking bowls and a bag with astragals hang on the walls . The inside picture shows a young athlete putting on his sandal. Both images represent a related educational program.

According to the Greek conception of the time, young men should be educated both mentally and physically. Scenes that show in this way the daily life, are relatively rare on Attic vases, other familiar scenes can be found approximately at the Berlin Foundry Cup or the name vase of the Clinic Painter . The painter Duris shows such school scenes several times, which probably speaks for a certain status thinking. Schools in Athens at that time were not state-owned, but only a private educational institution that had to be financed privately and thus required a certain material status.
