Name vase

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In classical archeology , a name vase is used to describe certain vases, according to whose special characteristics an otherwise unknown vase painter was given an emergency name .

The assignment of these emergency names was necessary because most of the ancient vase painters did not sign; However, in order to be able to differentiate between individual artist personalities, the emergency names were used. The name can be given by things like motifs, owners, locations, storage locations, inscriptions or the potters. Most of the vases from Athens were named after the archaeologist John D. Beazley , who was the first to systematically process these vases, while the archaeologist Arthur D. Trendall was responsible for the sub-Italian vases .

Important representatives who were named after a name vase are, for example, the painter from Berlin A 34 , the Nessos painter , Andokides painter , Antimenes painter , Antiphon painter , Berlin painter and the Pistoxenos painter .
