Cristóbal Galán (* 1625, † 24. September 1684 in Madrid ) was a Spanish composer of the Baroque .

Life

Cristóbal Galán was singer and organist from 1653, later Kapellmeister in Cagliari in Sardinia , from 1656 to 1559 Kapellmeister in Morella . He then stayed in a position in Madrid that is now unknown. From 1664 to 1667 he was choir director at the Cathedral of Segovia , in 1667 he became music director at the Poor Clare monastery in Las Descalzas Reales in Madrid. In 1680 he was appointed Kapellmeister to the Spanish royal court.

Act

Cristóbal Galán created stage music for plays performed at the Spanish court, of which, however, only fragments such as individual arias or choirs have survived, which clearly show the influence of the Roman Baroque. Numerous Villancicos and other sacred and secular song forms from one to 13 voices, masses , motets , a requiem and other sacred music as well as chamber music for strings based on the Italian model in the form of solo, trio, quartet and octet sonatas have been preserved. His works were distributed in numerous music manuscripts of the 17th century from Spain and Latin America. From 1991 to 2004, John H. Baron published Galán's preserved works in ten volumes.
