Berlin painter
Berlin painter (active around 505-460 BC in.. Athens is) the notname a Greek vase painter of the Attic - red-figure style. He is considered a pioneer of the early classical period and one of the most talented vase painters of his time.
It was named after the amphora F 2160 from the Berlin Collection of Antiquities . Based on this work, between 200 and 250 works are assigned to him today, mostly medium-sized to large vessels such as abdominal and neck amphoras, hydria, craters and a few small-format ceramics such as pelicas and lekyths. To this day, no bowls painted by him are known, which is why it is assumed that he generally did not paint them. Deviating from his usual style, there are also a small number of black-figure Panathenaic amphorae that are also assigned to him. John Boardman , who ascribes almost 300 pieces to him, describes him as the best painter of the early 5th century BC. Next to the Cleophrades painter .
In his works the masculine dominates, which he captures in all his flowing movements. The figures of women and goddesses, on the other hand, appear somewhat stiff in their clothes, whose play of folds he does not use, and lack the dynamism of their male counterparts. As he matured, his painting became more and more routine and in his later work it lacks the experimental fire of youth, which is why researchers are divided as to whether the late works assigned to him today are actually by his hand or already works by students.
In his early style, the Berlin painter is close to the painters Euthymides and Phintias , who are known by name , which is why it is assumed that he could have been an apprentice to them. He himself was then a model for a whole generation of subsequent artists, some of whom he may have trained himself , for example the Achilles painter , Hermonax and the Providence painter .
