Life

Whitefield grew up in Shotts and attended Dykehead Primary School and Calderhead High School . She then went to Glasgow Caledonian University, where she graduated with a degree in Public Administration and Management .

Political career

In 1988 Whitefield joined the Labor Party and supported the House of Commons John Reid in his work. In 1991 she became personal assistant to MP Rachel Squire .

In the 1999 Scottish general election , Whitefield was a candidate for the Labor Party for the constituency of Airdrie and Shotts . With a clear lead over the candidate of the SNP she won the mandate and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament . In the following parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2007 , she defended her mandate. The parliamentary elections in 2011 brought a change in the MP from Airdrie and Shotts, because the SNP politician Alex Neil managed to win the constituency for his party for the first time. After the Labor Party's massive, nationwide loss of votes in these elections, the party was largely realigned in terms of personnel. In the process, Whitefield was appointed shadow minister for children and young people.
