Michael Goodall Watson, Baron Watson of Invergowrie , known as Mike Watson (born May 1, 1949 in Cambuslang ) is a Scottish politician and former member of the Labor Party .

Watson attended High School of Dundee and then Heriot-Watt University .

British House of Commons

After the death of Robert McTaggart , the envoy of the Glasgow Central constituency , in 1989 new elections were scheduled in which Watson represented the Labor Party. He clearly won against the candidate of the SNP , the later MP Alex Neil , and moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . He defended his mandate in the subsequent general election in 1992 . In the course of the constituency reform, the constituency of Glasgow Central was dissolved. Watson wanted to run for the newly created constituency of Glasgow Govan in the following general election, won the first nomination vote by one vote, but was defeated in the repeat vote by Mohammed Sarwar . In order to be nominated as a candidate for Glasgow Govan anyway, Watson threatened to give back his current mandate for the constituency of Glasgow Central and thus provoke new elections, which the SNP would likely win. He also announced the publication of a book in which he would describe the circumstances of the Glasgow Govan nomination. As a result, Sarwar remained as a direct candidate for the constituency (and was able to win the election against the SNP candidate Nicola Sturgeon .) Watson was raised to life peer as Baron Watson of Invergowrie , of Invergowrie in Perth and Kinross, and thus received one lifelong seat in the House of Lords .

Scottish Parliament

In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999 Watson ran for the constituency of Glasgow Cathcart and won the mandate with a clear lead over the candidate of the SNP . As a result, he moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament and between November 2001 and May 2003 held the position of Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport. In the 2003 general election , Watson again clearly defended his mandate.

Arson charges

In the spring of 2005, Watson was charged with two cases of arson. He is said to have deliberately set fire to two curtains in an Edinburgh hotel as part of the Scottish Politician of the Year festivities . After Watson initially stated that he was not guilty, he then pleaded guilty to one of the two accused cases. In September 2005, Watson was sentenced to 16 months in prison. In the course of this development, Watson resigned his seat in the Scottish Parliament and resigned as chairman of the Dundee United football club . Since the title of Life Peer is awarded for life, there have been no changes regarding his seat in the House of Lords. Labor candidate Charles Gordon won the by-election in the Glasgow Cathcart constituency .
