Kenny MacAskill

Kenny MacAskill ( Scottish Gaelic Coinneach MacAsgaill ; born April 28, 1958 in Edinburgh , Scotland ) is a British lawyer and politician ( SNP ). He was Minister of Justice in Scotland from 2007 to 2014 .

Life

MacAskill attended Linlithgow Academy and then studied law at the University of Edinburgh . He then worked as a lawyer.

Political career

In the 1990s he was a member of the wing of the SNP, which demanded a quick proclamation of Scottish independence , and often disagreed with today's First Minister Alex Salmond . MacAskill has been a Member of the Scottish Parliament since 1999 .

Regarding the attack on Glasgow International Airport , he claimed that it was not perpetrated by local residents of Scotland but by people residing there.

On August 20, 2009, MacAskill released Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi , who had been convicted of the Lockerbie attack but was viewed by Libya as a political prisoner , because he was fatally ill with cancer and, according to doctors, had less than three months to live. Before announcing his decision, Hillary Clinton had called the Attorney General and urged that al-Megrahi not be released.
