Stewart Maxwell (born December 24, 1963 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Maxwell attended King's Park Secondary School and Glasgow College of Technology , where he earned a bachelor's degree in social sciences. He is married and has one daughter.

Political career

In 1992 Maxwell joined the SNP. In 1999 he ran for East Renfrewshire Regional Council but was not elected. In the British general election in 2001 Maxwell applied for the direct mandate of the Eastwood constituency , but received only 8.6% of the vote and thus clearly missed entry into the British House of Commons .

In the Scottish general election in 2003 , Maxwell ran in the constituency of Eastwood , but received only the fourth-highest percentage of votes. Since Maxwell was also placed in third place on the regional electoral list of the SNP for the electoral region West of Scotland , he received one of three list mandates for the SNP in this electoral region as a result of the election result and moved into the Scottish Parliament for the first time. In September 2004 he was named deputy party spokesman for health. In the shadow cabinet of the SNP at the time, Maxwell was designated as Deputy Secretary of State for Health. From September 2006 he then acted as party spokesman for culture and sport and took the position of minister for sport, culture and media in the shadow cabinet of the SNP. In the parliamentary elections in 2007 and 2011 , he was able to increase his share of the vote in the Eastwood constituency, but missed the direct mandate in both cases significantly. Maxwell defended his list mandate for the electoral region West of Scotland, or 2011 West Scotland . Following the 2007 election, Maxwell was named Secretary of State for Community and Sports, and held that post until February 2009.
