Campbell Martin (born March 10, 1960 in Irvine ) is a Scottish politician. He is a former member of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and a current member of the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP).

Life

Martin attended Adrossan Academy and James Watt College in Greenock . Between 1980 and 1993 he worked in various professions, including scaffolding, disc jockey and taxi driver. Campbell currently works as a freelance journalist.

Political career

In 1992 Martin made his first appearance on a political level when he was elected to the district council of Cunninghame for the SNP . After Cunninghame had largely been renamed North Ayrshire and installed as a Unitary Authority , he was no longer elected to the newly created regional council in the following council elections in 1995. In the first term of the Scottish Parliament , Martin worked for SNP MP Kay Ullrich . In the British general election in 2001 , he applied for the direct mandate of the constituency of Cunninghame North , but received only the second highest percentage of votes and thus missed entry into the British House of Commons .

In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 2003 , Martin ran in Cunninghame North and, with 27.1% of the vote, missed the direct mandate behind Labor candidate Allan Wilson . However, since Martin was also placed on the regional electoral list of the SNP for the electoral region West of Scotland in first place, he received one of three list mandates for the SNP in this electoral region as a result of the election result and moved into the Scottish Parliament for the first time. After he publicly criticized the SNP party leader John Swinney , Martin was initially excluded from the party for six months. A few months later a decision was made to exclude them for life. For the rest of the legislative period, Martin took part in parliamentary life as a non-party. In 2007 he ran as a non-party candidate in Cunninghame North, but received no mandate and thus resigned from parliament. In 2011 he joined the Scottish Socialist Party.
